INTERVIEW WITH KATIE HAMSTEAD, AUTHOR OF DECEPTIVE CADENCE

As I'm organizing this very blog, I understand that Katie is off to the hospital--best of luck!
Therefore, we will begin with baby talk:

Katie Hamstead

1) Best baby advice you ever received.
Katie: Everyone will give you advice, but not all of it will work for you. Choose what fits you and baby best, and thank the rest politely.

2) WORST baby advice you ever received.
Katie: Umm, I can't think of anything terrible honestly.

3) Any food cravings you're willing to share?
Katie: This pregnancy, chicken salad sandwiches. Last one, cheese.

4) What Australian food do you miss most? (I should explain that Katie is from Australia.)
Katie: All of it lol! Probably Tim Tams and Milo.

5) Tell us something we probably don't know about Australia.
Katie: Just like Americans, Aussies have a variety of accents too. Not as strongly differing, but you can tell a Sydney person from an Adelaide person. Also, Sydney is like the hub of multiculturalism. I don't think there's a single race not represented somewhere there. It made growing up so diverse and beautiful.

Just For Fun
1) What's your favorite movie starring John Travolta?
Katie: Grease ;-)
Ann: But Of Course!!!

2) What's your favorite Olivia Newton John song? (because she's from Australia AND she's totally awesome)
Katie: She did a duet with Keith Urban called Sun Burnt Country. Then there's the duet she did with John Farnham from the Sydney Olympics, Dare to Dream.
Ann: I gotta check those two out. I'm stuck back in the 80s as far as she is concerned.

3) Describe the most embarrassing hairdo or hair day you've ever had.  (Just look at poor Olivia here...)
Katie: I went to a student salon and asked for the face framing layers, and they chopped it instead of using the razor thing. It ended up looking blocky and weird.
Ann: After having the back of my head SHAVED once (which is not what I asked for, BTW), I have a big fear of going to the hair salon. In fact, I haven't been to one for 1 & 1/2 years now. Hair neglect, I know.

4) If you're willing to share--what was the worst date you ever endured?
Katie: It was a group date, and my date wouldn't pay for anything and expected me to drive. My guy friend on the date ended up covering me and his date because they guy pretty much ignored me the whole time.
Ann: Dating kind of sucks, doesn't it? haha

5) Please share a picture of your favorite shoes.
Katie: I don't have one...
Ann: Then you need to borrow my Converse sometime. :)

Author Questions
1) What event would you call your breakthrough as an author?
Katie: GUTGAA 2012. Best query comp I've ever joined.

2) What do you know now that you wish you knew much earlier on as an author?
Katie: There's too much! As a newbie, I honestly had no clue. Passive voice, show vs tell, info dumping, it goes on ad on.

3) What's the best marketing advice you can give other authors?
Katie: Don't throw links etc at people. Be considerate, not spammy, and try to help others around you. Your reputation as a human being will greatly outweigh any blurb. You'll get more people raising their hand to help if you show a willingness to assist others.

4) Name 5 books you wish you'd written (and not just for the money and fame).
Katie: Ahh, hmm... Narnia. That's like 7 right? Does that count?
Ann: What a MOST EXCELLENT answer!

(Said no one, EVER.)

5) List 5 books you loved as a child.
Katie: As a child... Pony Pals, Saddle Club, The Silver Brumby (yes, there's a theme there) Ella Enchanted and heading into my teens Looking For Alibrandi.

Now here's more about her newest book:

Publisher: REUTS Publications
Genre: New Adult, Magical Realism, Romance

Cadence Anderson has the perfect definition of happily ever after . . .

Until she doesn't. A freak earthquake shatters her life as surely as her home, taking away everything she holds dear. She wakes in a hospital to find that her beloved husband and infant daughter have been killed, crushed by the earthquake's wrath. Disoriented, injured, and alone, Cadence refuses to accept the loss. So when a man claiming to be her guardian angel appears and offers her a chance to go back in time to save her family, she doesn't need to give it a second thought. She accepts.

Thrust back eleven years, she now faces the ordeal of high school all over again. But this time, she's armed with all the knowledge of her adult life and the determined to do everything better, from preventing the loss of her best friend to avoiding her original, drama-inducing boyfriends. She's focused solely on Austin, her future husband, and is content to bide her time until she meets him again.

But then James Gordon crosses her path. Cadence wants to remain single, but James has his sights set. He is determined to win her over, and he's very hard to resist. As Cadence starts to develop unwanted feelings for him, she realizes he threatens to disrupt everything, changing the future and distracting her from her original goal. Now, Cadence must choose: deny the unpredictable and exciting path James offers her, or stay true to the life she had and is trying desperately to resurrect. Second chances are more complicated than they seem.

Deceptive Cadence combines the soaring emotion of a heartfelt romance with the innovative storytelling of magical realism, crafting a uniquely moving, intricate tale about love and loss that asks: what would you do if given the chance to right all your wrongs?
