AUTHOR INTERVIEW with SUMMER WIER, author of LINK

Q) Do you own a cat? The Black Cat Blog wants proof (a picture).

Unlike most writerly folks, I do not have a cat. I am super allergic to them, so I've never really been a fan. I love animals, though, and have a hard time resisting puppies. Here's a picture of our family pup. She's a black lab/great dane mix, almost 100 lbs but the biggest baby ever! We sure love her.

Q) Please share a picture of your favorite shoes.

I love comfortable shoes, and very few things are more comfy than plain old flip flops. Black flip flops will always be a staple in my footwear. Here's a pic of this year's fave pair.

Q) What's your favorite Disney film?

I absolutely adore Beauty and the Beast. There are so many things that speak to me in that film, beyond the fact that Belle loves books (obviously a plus). I've always been fascinated with French history, culture, and the language, so I loved that aspect of the animated tale. I don't know if the original story had those elements, but the way Disney portrayed Belle made me want to be her!

Q) How do you balance having a family and writing? Time is such a constraint.

It's hard!!! I still feel like I fail at this all the time, mostly because writing gets the short end of the stick. I love writing, I do, but family comes first. So even though it can be frustrating to have to leave a scene when I'm right in the middle of it, or heck, to miss writing time completely because of the day job or family responsibilities, I try to find happiness in whatever each day brings.

Q) Bouncing off the last question, how do you balance being an accountant, working at REUTS, and being and author (plus being mom and all that entails, of course).

Oi. Remember that part about feeling like a failure? I constantly feel like I have too much on my plate, but just keeping attacking my To-Dos. I work A LOT, but I also function so much better when I have a full plate vs having a lot of spare time. I'm super organized and efficient. I block out certain times for certain things, and, again, it's usually my own writing that gets pushed to the bottom of the priority list. I have a hard time saying no when people need my help or ask for things (whether at work, with marketing, needs of family an/ord friends etc), so I'm always trying to fit in "one more thing". It all gets a little crazy, but somehow the overall pattern seems to even out--even allowing me to squeeze in writing time--and I just keep swimming!

Q) What's the best marketing advice you can give other authors?

There's so much ground to cover, so many different avenues and methods for promotion when marketing books. I always recommend doing what you're comfortable with, what you can stay on top of. It's easy to want to tackle a million different things, and then become overwhelmed with everything. So plan small consistent tasks, and once you're in the rhythm of accomplishing those, you can add more to your plate if you're up for it!

Q) List 5 books you loved as a child.

Anything Nancy Drew, Shel Silverstein poem books (I used to have a lot of them memorized), The Chronicles of Narnia, Choose Your Own Adventure books, and Anne of Green Gables.

Q) If you were to be executed tomorrow, what would you choose as a meal for your last supper?

Outside of picking something easy like a Thanksgiving meal or something, I'd be happy to spend my last hours with buffalo wings and ranch, roasted veggies (like zucchini and squash YUM!), bacon-wrapped, cream cheese-filled jalapenos, grapes and Gouda, gingerbread cheesecake, and, of course, OREOS. (Man, I'm so hungry now!)

Q) Do you have any recipes you'd like to share? (I understand you enjoy cooking. I battle with cooking at times. So many disasters, so little time... haha)

I do love cooking! When I need to clear my mind, or just need a break, I'll take a minute to whip something up. One of our family favorites is Nutella Brownies. They're super easy to make, and, of course, they never last long! This is the best recipe I've found: http://www.food.com/recipe/nutella-brownies-507272

About LINK:

For seventeen-year-old Kira, there’s no better way to celebrate a birthday than being surrounded by friends and huddled beside a campfire deep in the woods. And with a birthday in the peak of summer, that includes late night swims under the stars.

Or at least, it used to.

Kira’s relaxing contemplation of the universe is interrupted when a piece of it falls, colliding with her and starting a chain of events that could unexpectedly lead to the one thing in her life that's missing—her father.

Tossed into a pieced-together world of carnivals and gypsies, an old-fashioned farmhouse, and the alluring presence of a boy from another planet, Kira discovers she’s been transported to the center of a black hole, and there’s more to the story than science can explain. She’s now linked by starlight to the world inside the darkness. And her star is dying.

If she doesn’t return home before the star’s light disappears and her link breaks, she’ll be trapped forever. But she’s not the only one ensnared, and with time running out, she’ll have to find a way to save a part of her past and a part of her future, or risk losing everything she loves.

Dreamy, fluid, and beautiful, Link pairs the mystery of science fiction with the minor-key melody of a dark fantasy, creating a tale that is as human as it is out of this world.

Available now from Amazon, and other retailers.
